The new album from The Postmarks, Memoirs at the End of the World, is a sublime marriage of cinematic melodies, sonic experimentation and classic soul harmonies. In short, it’s an album that oozes instant appeal.
We caught up with Christopher Moll, Tim Yehezkely and Jonathan Wilkins, aka The Postmarks, to chat about what happens on tour and which band member gets the most attention from the gays!
You’re based in Florida and you’re set to release your new album in the UK – what things spring to mind when you think of the UK?
Fish & chips, rain and bow ties.
What’s the best thing about being in a band?
Writing songs, making records and touring new places.
What are the biggest stresses in the band?
Being around each other nonstop and the lack of privacy while touring gets a little overwhelming, but we handle it pretty well.
What has been the most important event for The Postmarks in the past year?
Touring Europe with Bell X1.
Tell us about your album Memoirs at the End of the World – what can listeners expect?
It's cinematic, influenced by John Barry and Ennio Morricone. It's dark but there are some shiny little pop songs on there, too.
What was it like to record?
We were under a tight deadline so there was a lot of pressure. It was a challenge but we embraced it and it embraced us back. Oh, and Tim wrote the lyrics in a tree!
What are you most proud of about the album?
It has a bigger sound than the first album and it feels like we've grown in many ways. There are songwriting contributions from Tim ('Go Jetsetter') and Jon ('The Girl From Algenib', 'Gone') this time as well, so it was a more collaborative approach.
"A nude male centrefold ended up on Jeff's keyboard and a few minutes later on Tim's monitor in the middle of the set. It was kind of distracting!"
So, what’s a gig by The Postmarks like?
We play some mellow tunes as well as some that rock out a little more than you might expect, and Tim may tell a joke, but only if you ask.
Tell us about something funny that’s happened to you guys on tour…
The funniest tour experience was when we were touring with Brookville. Someone bought a pack of nude male model playing cards and they kept mysteriously appearing on pedal boards during shows.
It went back and forth between the two bands for pretty much the whole tour, culminating at the Bell House in Brooklyn, when a nude male centrefold ended up on Jeff's keyboard and a few minutes later on Tim's monitor in the middle of the set. It was kind of distracting!

Have you noticed a bit of a gay following at all?
Yes, we always have gay and lesbian fans in the audience. They have a great sense of what’s happening next in music and they are always big supporters at our live shows. I think that it doesn't hurt to have a stylish hot lead singer like Tim to attract the ladies!
Do you ever hit the gay clubs on a night out?
No, we haven't - but we should! We need someone to tell us where to go.
So, which band member gets the most same-sex attention then?
Jeff, our sexy keyboard player, has a male stalker. We like to tease him about it all the time.
"Jeff, our sexy keyboard player, has a male stalker. We like to tease him about it all the time."
Finish the sentence: A good night out starts with…
Champagne and orange juice.
It ends with…
Laughter – lots of it!
What’s the mission for the band?
Tour the world, score a soundtrack, keep writing music forever and meeting our fans in every country!
And finally, what’s your favourite instrument?
The singing saw.
